COVID-19: Maldives records 508 new cases

Health Protection Agency (HPA), on Sunday, announced 508 additional cases of the new coronavirus, increasing confirmed coronavirus cases in Maldives to 30,745.

According to HPA, the 508 new cases include; 276 cases from the greater Male’ region, 185 cases from residential islands outside Male’, 12 cases from operational resorts, 3 cases from liveaboards, and 32 cases from industrial islands.

This marks the highest single-day spike the country has recorded to date.

Meanwhile, 134 additional coronavirus patients were confirmed to have made full recoveries over the last 24 hours, increasing total recoveries to 25,068.

With the new developments, Maldives now has 5,594 active cases.

There are 172 patients in hospitals.

3,523 samples (including repeated samples) have been tested for the new coronavirus over the last 24-hours.

With the 508 new infections this Sunday, 2,871 people have tested positive over the last one-week period.

74 coronavirus patients have died from complications.

Maldives has experienced a surge in COVID-19 infections in recent weeks – both in the capital and in residential islands outside the capital.

Over 20 residential islands outside of the greater Male' region have confirmed COVID-19 cases and are under monitoring, including the populous Addu City and Kulhudhuffushi City.

HPA has imposed a ban on non-essential domestic travel to curb the surge.
