EC to recount 18 ballot boxes to confirm results

Elections Commission has made the decision to recount ballots in 18 boxes at the Local Council Elections and Women’s Development Committee Elections held last Saturday.

EC has begun announcing preliminary results for some of the electoral districts and states the result sheets on some of the districts remain unverified.

EC said that they will begin recounting ballots to confirm the results at 01:30 pm this Tuesday. The recount will be done at the re-registration hall of Elections Center in the presence of respective candidates.

“These ballot boxes are being counted to confirm preliminary results,” said EC.

3,934 candidates competed in the recent elections. The political party which took the most seat remains unclear. Ruling MDP lost its long-held majority in Male’ City Council to opposition PPM, with PPM deputy leader Dr. Mohamed Muizzu taking the mayoral seat.

MDP recently announced it is seeking recounts in four electoral districts of Male’ which the party lost by small margins.
