Health authorities have confirmed 24 new COVID-19 cases in K. Huraa, increasing total active cases in the island to 28.

An official from Huraa Council told Sun the 24 new cases on Thursday include four people above the age of 65 years, and four children.

The official said that many of the residences in Huraa are under quarantine, and that results on many of the samples remain pending.

65 more people identified through contact tracing on the new cases on Thursday will also be tested for COVID-19.

Huraa was placed under monitoring on March 23 after an elderly patient transferred from the island to Male’ City tested positive for COVID-19.

The official who spoke to Sun said authorities have yet to identify the source of the infection, and that scores had travelled in and out of the island before it was placed under monitoring, heightening the risk of the virus spreading to other islands.

In addition to the 24 new cases in Huraa, K. Dhiffushi also confirmed three new cases this Thursday. The three new cases were identified by Dhiffushi Health Center as school students.

The cases in Dhiffushi are linked with the R. Ungoofaaru cluster.
