A random sample taken in G. Dh. Thinadhoo came back positive for COVID-19 on Monday, a day after the island was placed under monitoring by health authorities following a positive case linked with the outbreak in Addu City.

Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital’s manager Ahmed Saeed told Sun that health authorities have taken over 400 random samples in Thinadhoo to detect a possible community outbreak in the island.

“One has tested positive so far,” he said.

Thinadhoo Council’s president Ali Amjad told Sun that the person who tested positive does not have a recent history of travel to another island.

Authorities imposed travel restrictions in Thinadhoo on Sunday, after a person who travelled from Addu on February 3 and is a contact of a confirmed case in Addu tested positive for COVID-19.

With the new case this Monday, Thinadhoo now has two confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Meanwhile, Addu City now has 40 confirmed cases, and has implemented additional measures to control the spread of COVID-19 including suspending dine-in services at restaurants.
