Defendant asked to apologize after he proclaims love for state prosecutor

A defendant in a drug case has been asked to apologize after he proclaimed his love for the state prosecutor during a hearing at the Criminal Court.

The hearing in question during which the male defendant proclaimed his love for the female prosecutor took place earlier this week.

The proclamation led to the judge halting the hearing and initiating a probe for contempt of court.

Criminal Court’s media official confirms the incident to Sun.

The media official said that a hearing was suspended and an investigation launched for contempt of court after someone made an inappropriate comment during trial.

The media official said the person involved apologized for the comment, and that he has not been meted out any punishment.

Contempt of court during an ongoing hearing is grounds for immediate punishment.

The warning is issued by the court office prior to every court hearing.

Contempt of court is punishable by a maximum 15 day jail sentence or a maximum MVR 10,000 fine.
