34 cases of govt. corruption reported during COVID-19 situation

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has stated that 34 cases of alleged governmental corruption was reported during the COVID-19 situation. 

ACC president Mariyam Shiuna, in an address on the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day said that the expenditure of the government to overcome the COVID-19 situation was high. 

The biggest lesson was, that even during such crisis, acts of corruption could occur and that those committing such acts of corruption had no humanity in the misuse of public funds and goods, said Shiuna.

She said that if the perpetrators could find a way to enrichen themselves, they would do so, which is something that should be remembered. 

Shiuna said that the target of the ACC was to hold these perpetrators accountable without taking into account their party of politics. 

She said that the corruption acts observed during the COVID-19 situation had hindered the efforts to overcome the virus. The funds lost because of corruption could have been used to overcome the virus. 

She called for a systematic change to stop corruption and advocate against acts of corruption. She also said that corruption was not specific to a separate sector.
