Maldivian Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has said that the country could be faced with a huge detriment if schools in the nation, closed due to COVID-19, were not reopened soon.
Most schools in the capital Male’ City are currently conducting education online for lower grades and Nasheed, in today’s parliament sitting, said that this had to come to an end and that schools have to commence with social distancing measures.
“If schools in the nation remain closed, or are not conducted in a normal manner, the damage inflicted to the nation will be very high.” Said Nasheed.
He noted that the schools of Kandholhudhoo and Vilufushi were still trying to reach their previous standards after closing down due to the Tsunami crisis in 2004.
Nasheed also said that thoughts must be given to the negative effect of schools conducted through the means of the internet. Report cards were also issued online this year and the government has given no indication on whether schools will be commenced in the normal manner when the school year restarts again in January.
