MP for Maradhoo Ibrahim Shareef had directed stern criticism towards Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed for treating the parliament as a ‘school’.
Shareef’s anger “boiled over” after not being permitted to raise his concerns regarding the events inside the parliament where government officials were present for questioning today and the actions of the Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
It was observed that the Speaker was unhappy with some of the answers provided by Housing and Planning Minister Mohamed Aslam in today’s session.
“What I am saying is that we are not clear on the policy and what is happening regarding the statements of the Speaker when Ministers attend the parliament and answer questions. Sometimes, we are led to believe that the Minister is being untruthful.” Said Shareef speaking on a point of order.
Nasheed cut off MP Shareef at this point, however, the MP kept on expressing his discontent.
Shareef said that he had gained more votes than the Speaker of the Parliament who was elected to the Central Mahchangoalhi constituency.
“The parliament cannot be run like a school with pillars provided to children.” Said the MP.
After Maavashu MP Mohamed Saeed complained regarding the actions of MP Shareef and Speaker Nasheed, Nasheed handed out a punishment reminiscent of punishments handed out in schools.
“I am instructing the MP for Maradhoo, to write 100 times that he will not behave in this uncivilized manner again.” Said Speaker Nasheed.
