Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has submitted a confidential letter to the Parliament, stating that Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is refusing to disclose information regarding its investigations as requested.
The letter was discussed during a meeting of Parliament’s Independent Institutions Committee on Monday. The meeting was held behind closed doors, and the details of the contents of the letter remain unclear.
Independent Institutions Committee’s chair, Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam said the letter pertained to the refusal of ACC to disclose information regarding its investigations.
The Prosecutor General is authorized under Article 223 (d) of the Constitution to ascertain the legality of criminal investigations and inquiries.
The Prosecutor General therefore has a legal obligation to oversee investigations carried out by the police and ACC.
