President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has requested the counsel of the Judicial Service Commission regarding the proposed appointment of two Supreme Court Justices.

Criminal Court’s interim senior judge Ali Rasheed Hussain and Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim are the two names forwarded by the President for the top court’s nomination.

President Solib tweeted that he had requested the counsel of the JSC regarding the two appointments.

Judge Ali Rasheed was appointed to the Criminal Court on an interim basis following the suspension of the then senior judge Ahmed Hailam by the JSC.

Ali Rasheed had served as the senior judge of the Civil Court before his appointment to the Criminal Court. The judge had moved to the Drug Court on his own request.

Currently, two seats of the Supreme Court are vacant. The current bench of the Supreme Court is filled by Justices Dr. Azmiralda Zahir, Aisha Shujoon who made history last year when they became the first two female justices to be appointed to the Supreme Court in the Maldives.

The Supreme Court is headed by Chief Justice Ahmed Muhthasim Adnan. Justice Husnu Al Suood, Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir are also of the bench of the highest court in the Maldives.
