A large number of people attended the Eid Al-Adha prayers today in Male’ City and islands across the nation, despite the threat posed by COVID-19.
Most of the attendees were noticeably foreigners with the number of locals attending the congregational prayers numbering few.
Islamic Ministry had requested last night that elderly individuals and people with long term illnesses to refrain from attending prayers. The Ministry also requested that attendees are to bring their own prayer mats and wear masks, which are now mandatory when outdoors.
However, despite this, many were not wearing masks when they attended the prayers today.
Worshippers were only allowed inside the Islamic Center in the capital if they were wearing masks. However, some took off their masks after entering the mosque. Despite the increase in caseload as of recently, prayers were still conducted without any social distancing.
Some islands also saw mass prayers held in outdoor areas. However, islands with a larger population refrained from such prayers due to the threat from the virus.
The sermon today, recognized the gift of Islam as the biggest blessing for the country and called on the public and leaders to uphold and maintain the religion and sovereignty of the nation. The sermon also called to hold celebrations as specified in the religion.
“This is the time to build a cleaner life, by changing the social situation that is tainted. This can only be attained by making Islam the main study of our life.” Read the sermon before calling to establish unity.
