State of public health emergency in Maldives extended

The declared state of Public Health Emergency in the Maldives has been extended until July 14. 

The public health emergency was declared in the Maldives on March 12 after the first case of COVID-19 was identified from a resort in the country on March 7. The emergency was set to expire by tomorrow. 

A signed announcement by Health Minister Abdulla Ameen issued tonight, read that there was still a chance of the virus spreading in the country and was the reason why the public health emergency was being extended. The public health emergency will now expire at July 14.  

Male’ City first identified a COVID-19 case on April 15. The city was placed under curfew and lockdown. After nearly, two months the lockdown was eased on June 15. More easements are to be rolled out in the next month and the government has also announced that the borders of the country will be reopened on July 15.
