Joint Committee sets deadline to finalize report on investigations

The Joint Parliamentary Committee examining the progress made on the MMPRC corruption scandal and the deaths and disappearances with unknown circumstances in the country is to finalize its report on the investigations by June 18.

The matters were presented for a Parliament inquiry by MP for North Henveiru Ibrahim Muizzu, to clarify the progress made regarding both investigations. Both investigations are being examined by a joint committee of the Parliament including the Judiciary Committee and the Committee on National Security Services.

The first meeting of the Joint Committee today saw MP for North Maafannu Imthiyaz Fahmy appointed as the Committee Chair and MP for Hulhumale’ Ali Niyaz appointed as the Vice-Chair.  Proposed by the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament and MP for North Galolhu Eva Abdulla, the appointments of the two MPs as the Committee Chair and Vice-Chair was supported by Thimarafushi MP Abdulla Riyaaz. The proposed appointments were then passed unanimously by all MPs of the Committee.

The five-member joint Committee is comprised of:

• MP for Hulhumale’ Ali Niyaz (Committee chair)
• MP for North Maafannu Imthiyaz Fahmy (Committee Vice-Chair)
• MP for North Henveiru Ibrahim Muizzu
• MP for West Henveiru Hassan Latheef
• MP for Vilingili Saudh Hussain

The final report of the progress of the investigations will be sent once the Joint Committee passes the report. Attaining justice for the unknown deaths and disappearances as well as for the MMPRC scandal is a pledge made by the ruling party MDP, which holds a supermajority in the parliament.
