Sunday, May 24 declared as Eid al-Fitr

It has been declared that Sunday, May 24 will be the Eid al-Fitr day for the year 2020.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan and the beginning of the month of Shawwal in the Islamic Hijri calendar.

Eid al-Fitr, is the religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan. 

Speaking in the moon sighting ceremony to declare the end of Ramadan, Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahir stated that the moon signaling the beginning of the month of Shawwal was not visible to any part of the country nor to other Islamic nations on the 29th day of the month of Ramadan, which is today.

Under the guidelines set for the procedure in the Maldives, It was decided tomorrow, May 23 will be the last day of the month of Ramadan in the Hijri year 1441.

Despite Sunday marking the Eid al-Fitr holida, traditional Eid Paryers will not be conducted in the capital due to the situation with COVID-19. A day that is marked as joyous day in the country, will not be celebrated much due to the restrictions in place in the country.
