Police: Possible terror attack led to Maafushi Prison raid

Police have announced that intelligence received of a possible terrorist attack being planned in Maafushi Prison has been foiled.

Speaking in a press conference tonight, Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Riyaaz stated that the intelligence has led to Police raiding the prison and seizing several items.

The operation conducted in collaboration with Maldives Corrections was conducted to prevent a dangerous act of terrorism said ACP Riyaaz who added that mobile phones, USB, and chargers were seized in the raid on the prison cells.

The raid was to stop a possible attack that was communicated between inmates and people on the outside. The inmates had been imprisoned in connection with recent terror attacks in Male' City.

Intelligence was received that the inmates were planning to carry out an attack by outsiders that could disrupt the safety and security of the country.

“Some of communication devices used for the purpose has been confiscated. Details of the case can only be provided after analyzing the devices.” Said ACP Riyaaz.
