Finance Minister: The economy needs a ventilator

Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer has described the situation with the Maldivian economy as dire enough that it needs a ventilator.

The Minister was speaking in a press conference today when he made the similarity between the treatments for COVID-19, which has left the economy in the situation. The Minister’s words described the situation of the economy as extremely dire.

He noted that the tourism industry of the Maldives was at a complete standstill and the economy was suffering as a result. Minister Ameer stated that this was not the usual scenario for the economy which was in bad need of medication.

“Every medication has side effects, even with the side effects, if the medication is not used the damage inflicted is too much.” Said Minister Ameer.

He added that treating the side effects of the medication for the economy would immediately commence after the first initiatives are made.

“We have to take steps to maintain the parts of the economy, which is the human resources, capital, and assets.” Said Minister Ameen, a move he described as extremely imperative if hesitated upon could prove to be detrimental.
