Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has announced that the proposed worker's village to house migrant workers in the country will be able to accommodate 40,000 people.

The proposed site of the village is in Gulhifalhu, near Male’ City.

The Minister was speaking in the parliamentary Committee on National Security & Foreign Relations today when he provided details of the village. The Minister stated that while the economy still needed migrant workers, the activities related to migrant workers have gone over the limit due to the failure to conduct the activities through a regulated framework.

The current administration will be attempting to conduct the matters related to migrant workers in a regulated manner and the minister noted the guidelines issued for migrant worker accommodation as a testament to this.

The worker's village will house around 40,000 migrants and will be built on 30 hectares of reclaimed land.

“This is to ensure that people we need for work, have their human rights guaranteed and the basic mediums for humans are established. So, god willing, this work will go on.” Said the Minister.

The Minister estimated that the village will be completed within two years.

Within a week, the government will turn apartments in Gulhifalhu to a livable standard and move 5000 people to the location. In addition to this, the government is also working to establish accommodation for 10,000 or 15,000 from Hulhumale’.

The Minister described this work as an investment, as the expenses of housing the migrants would be repaid by the private companies that are responsible for bringing the migrants.
