Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed cited the Health protection Agency when he stated that around 8000 cases of the Covid-19 virus could be expected in the country in the long run despite a lack of safety measures.
Nasheed was speaking in a parliamentary session today to discuss how future sessions are to be conducted when he revealed the numbers. He added that the figures would come true if there was a lack safety measures and stated that the disease could stop infecting people within 80 days.
Even with the safety measures, the disease would still infect the same number of people in the long run, said Nasheed citing the epidemiological survey.
“From the measures, we implement right now, we can find relief from the situation in 210 days. The point to be noted is that the same number of people are infected when the steps are implemented but in a longer period of time,” said Nasheed. He highlighted that the safety measures were because the country could not possibly treat a large number of infected cases simultaneously.
Nasheed went to say that the parliament must be wary of the government to ensure that the appropriate measures are taken before saying that the work was something the parliament owed to the public.
“The lockdown measure is for preparation. The most needed resource to prepare, in my view, is this parliament. The reason why I see it like this is that according to the government and journalists, the country has not made payments for ventilators. Most of the time, thi8ngs are available when payments are made.” said Nasheed.
If the parliament does not meet the necessary legal requirements, the government cannot make preparations.
“If our airplanes can travel to Malaysia carrying Theluli Faiy, cant we also go and get 157 of these things (ventilators)? I believe that the parliament is opened to convey criticism, I believe that if I do not extend this criticism, we are not fulfilling our responsibilities,” said Nasheed.
