A second Maldivian national tests positive for COVID-19

Health Protection Agency (HPA), on Sunday, announced a Maldivian national who travelled back from the UK has tested positive for COVID-19.

According to HPA, the individual in question has been in quarantine at the Royal Island Resort since arriving from the UK.

All inbound air passengers, with the exception of tourists with resort bookings, are now required to undergo 14 days in quarantine in a government designated facility.

This marks the second Maldivian national to test positive for the virus in two days. The first had been a 38-year-old male who had also travelled back from the UK on March 22, and had been in quarantine at the Holiday Island Resort since.

All previous virus cases in Maldives had been foreign nationals either vacationing or working at resorts or safaris.

The new case increased the number of people who tested positive for the virus in Maldives to 17, including two Italian nationals whose test results were received after they departed from Maldives, on March 27.

11 have since recovered, pushing down the number of active cases to 4.
