Former pres. Yameen's summon cancelled at last minute

Former President Abdulla Yameen’s summoning for questioning by the Police has been canceled at the last minute.

The former president was scheduled to attend the police today at 13:00. police did not give a reason as to why the session was canceled.

The government had received criticism from the opposition and Yameen’s defense team for summoning him for questioning at a time when two cases of the Covid-19 disease had been identified in the country. The opposition called for Yameen to be moved to house arrest.

Yameen is convicted of money laundering and is serving a five-year sentence for the crime.

Former vice president Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, who is now part of Yameen’s legal team tweeted earlier that Yameen was summoned to the Police today. 

“The whole country was suddenly unsettled last night. The dangerous disease was identified in the country. This is the time for kindness from one to another. However, the Police are rushing to summon president Yameen to the investigation at 13:00 today.” read a tweet by Dr. Jameel who also questioned whether the authorities had nothing better to do at this time.

Yameen is accused of money laundering, embezzling and bribery in the MMPRC scandal.
