A tourist in V. Thinadhoo has been isolated after exhibiting symptoms of the Covid-19 disease.
Authorities are now working to transport the man to a designated center where the person will be monitored and tested for the disease.
Health Protection Agency (HPA) tweeted that an Italian national who was spending time in V. Thinadhoo was moved to isolation after exhibiting symptoms of the disease.
This is the third such suspected case of the virus in the Maldives this week, although no cases have been tested in the country so far.
HPA stated last night that a local man who had arrived back from Italy, one of the worst-hit countries with the virus, was placed in isolation following suspected symptoms. The man was later released after testing negative. The agency later tweeted that another person was placed in isolation as well. Tests are being carried out to assess the person.
A total of 3,858 cases of the disease has been identified in Italy, with 148 deaths reported.
The Maldives currently has two isolation centers designated in case of a suspected case of the disease. The centers are in Farukolhufushi in the suburb of Hulhumale' phase 2, and Funadhoo near the capital Male' city.
While the chance of the disease being identified in the Maldives has increased, authorities are taking preventive measures just in case and even conducted emergency drills to respond in such situations. An emergency response center has also been established by the National Disaster Management Center and HPA.
