Health Protection Agency (HPA), on Thursday, confirmed a Maldivian citizen has been placed under isolation upon return home from Italy to monitor the person for possible symptoms of the deadly COVID-19 virus.

The person in question returned to Maldives this Thursday.

“Work on isolating a Maldivian citizen who returned to Maldives from Italy today, to monitor the person for COVID-19, is in progress,” said HPA.

Italy is the epicenter of Europe’s coronavirus outbreak. More than 3,000 have been infected and at least 107 have died, the most of any country outside China, where the illness began.

The Italian government, in its bid to curb the spread of the virus, has closed all schools and universities, and barred fans from all sporting events for the next few weeks.

The virus has caused over 94,000 infections and 3,200 deaths worldwide.
