Ex-President Yameen transported to Male' for consultation with a cardiologist

Former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who is serving a five-year prison sentence for money laundering, has been transported to Male’ for a medical consultation.

A Maldives Correctional Service spokesperson confirmed the former President was transported to Male’ on Wednesday morning.

The spokesperson said the former President remained at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for a consultation with a doctor, but declined to disclose any details.

Sun was able to confirm through a reliable source he was taken for a consultation with a cardiologist.

The former President was sentenced to five years in prison and MVR 5 million in fines on November 28, 2019, after he was found guilty of receiving and laundering USD 1 million from SOF Private Limited – the acquisition cost payable to MMPRC for the lease of G. A. Vodamula.

Appeal proceedings are underway at the High Court over the conviction.
