President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has sent greetings to the Maldivian people on occasion of the National Day of Solidarity being marked this Thursday.

National Day of Solidarity is marked on the anniversary of the tsunami which devastated Maldives on December 26, 2004. It is marked in recognition of the overwhelming display of humanity and solidarity by the Maldivian people in the wake of the disaster.

“As I send greetings and well wishes to the beloved Maldivian people on occasion of the National Day of Solidarity, I pray for Almighty Allah to grant eternal paradise to the beloved Maldivian people who lost their lives in the tsunami of December 26, 2004,” wrote the President in a short statement via his official Twitter account.

82 Maldivians were killed and 26 more went missing in the tsunami of 2004.

The official reception to mark the National Day of Solidarity this year is being hosted at Th. Vilufushi – one of the islands which suffered the heaviest losses in the tsunami. The reception will be attended by the President, who will also unveil a tsunami monument built at the island.
