Speaker of Parliament, former President Mohamed Nasheed has paid a visit to the Raj Ghat – the memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi.
Raj Ghat, located in the Ring Road or Mahatma Gandhi Road of New Delhi, is a black marble platform which marks the spot of his cremation following his assassination in 1948.
Nasheed was joined in his visit to pay respect to Gandhi by other members of the delegation from the Maldivian Parliament who are on an official visit to India.
Gandhi is renowned for his employment of nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule.
Nasheed, during the visit, wrote a note in which he hailed Gandhi as the biggest source of inspiration for freedom lovers across the world.

“Gandiji is undoubtedly the biggest inspiration of everything during our times. Gandiji’s principles and philosophy and actions inspired freedom lovers the world over, in our region and certainly in the Maldives,” wrote Nasheed.
He said that Gandhi’s philosophies had been the source of the inspiration which led to the successful implementation of multi-party democracy in Maldives.
“So many years after Gandiji was led to rest; a generation of young Maldivians are yet again inspired to raise and change their country to a multi-party democracy in 2008, and to maintain and consolidate that democracy. It indeed is a pleasure to visit Gandiji’s Maqbara,” wrote Nasheed.
Gandhi was assassinated by Hindhu nationalist Nathuram Godse on January 31, 1948.
Nasheed, in his note, wrote that while Gandhi may no longer be alive, his philosophies continued to serve as inspiration for people who seek to overthrow oppression.
