The deputy leader of the main opposition party PPM and Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam has called to summon the members of the Presidential Commission on Deaths and Disappearances (DDCOM) to the Parliament.
MP Shiyam made the request stating that he wanted to verify the authenticity of the report formed by the DDCOM regarding the murder of Dr. Afrasheem. The report which was sent to the President earlier this month has been made public. It shifted the blame of the murder towards people with extremist ideologies and religious differences with Dr. Afrasheem.
MP Shiyam who took a point of order in today’s session stated that he wanted to question the five members of the DDCOM as to whether the report was issued by them. Shiyam also cast doubt on the outcome of the report and stated that the speaker and those presiders of the Parliament were deciding big matters on their own while showing that it was a decision that the public wished.
Shiyam’s request was responded by the Speaker who stated that the members of the DDCOM would be summoned according to the wishes of the MP.
“If the honorable MP has doubts about the authenticity of the report, I also wish to verify if the information is correct. If the honorable MP wishes so, we will summon the five members and another five members to the Parliament to clear this,” said Nasheed.
Another MP had also cast doubts on the report by the DDCOM. Faresmaathoda MP Mohamed Latheef stated that the report was not issued with the approval of all five members of DDCOM and that it should be made clear why that was the case.
“We are informed that the report was not issued with the approval of the majority of DDCOM members. That it was issued by the approval of two members. This needs to be clarified to the public by the Parliament,”
“We are informed that the target of the report was diverted in a specific manner and that some members of the DDCOM tried to resign,” said Latheef, who is an independent MP.
