UN Special Rapporteur on torture meets with Speaker Nasheed

United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on torture Prof. Nils Melzer has met and held discussions with the former President and current Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.

The meeting held in the Parliament today saw the two discuss government policies aimed at preventing torture and inhumane treatment. Speaker Nasheed noted that this was an area that the Maldives gave extreme emphasis to and thanked the UN and its different bodies for the assistance provided to the Maldives.

The Special Rapporteur on torture Prof. Nils Melzer also discussed the details of his trip and spoke about the challenges faced by the Maldives in its endeavors to prevent inhumane cruel acts of torture. Prof. Nils Melzer and Speaker Nasheed also exchanged ideas on how to implement international human rights policies under the work to improve conditions in detention centers in the Maldives.

The Speaker was joined by Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla, Secretary-General Fathimath Niusha as well as some MPs.
