Former Home Minister Umar Naseer has criticized the allegations made against Dr. Shaheem in the Presidential Commission on Deaths and Disappearances’ (DDCOM) report into the murder of Dr. Afrasheem.
Umar decried the allegations as attempts to besmirch the name of Dr. Shaheem, who is also a religious scholar, and was named in the DDCOM’s report. Umar stated that he had read the whole report and found no links between Dr. Shaheem and Dr. Afrasheem’s murder made in the report.
“The only allegation against Dr. Shaheem is of misinforming the authorities. Even if the information is untrue, the report shows that it had no effect on the murder.”
Dr. Shaheem was the Islamic Minister of the Maldives during the cruel murder of Dr. Afrasheem in 2012. Umar praised the former Minister’s efforts to solve the differences that sparked between the religious scholars in the country at the time and said that the report showed that Dr. Shaheem conducted himself correctly.
“I am saddened that the Speaker of the Parliament defamed Dr. Shaheem without reading the report when this is how things are,” said Umar.
Umar also said that no one should be allowed to speak about the report without reading it completely and analyzing the details in it. Dr. Shaheem had responded to the allegations against him by stating that he did no support or encourage the murder of anyone.
However, Dr. Shaheem did forward a message to Dr. Afrasheem that was sent to him by an unnamed sender, before the murder of the prominent religious scholar. The message read that the senders of the message “would love Dr. Afrasheem again if he repented”.
