The panel of five judges appointed to the case of former President Yameen has decided to carry on with the sentencing process.
The case was halted on the day of sentencing when the previous judge in the case Ahmed Hailam was suspended by the Judicial Service Commission. Former President Yameen is charged with money laundering.
The procedure for a situation when the judge presiding over a case is stated in the Article (152) of the Criminal procedure Code. The article states that the judge has the discretionary power to carry on with the case or to start from the beginning.
The judge's bench appointed to the case after the suspension of Judge Hailam decided to go with the first option in today’s hearing. The senior judge in the case Judge Ali Rasheed stated that the reason was that most of the case including the witness statements process was completed.
The case will decided on October 28
