Speaker of Parliament, former President Mohamed Nasheed says the Parliament will finalize its decision regarding the impeachment motion filed by Judicial Service Commission (JSC) against Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi and Justice Adam Mohamed Abdulla on Monday, November 18.

The motion against Chief Justice Didi and Justice Adam was sent to the Parliament’s Judiciary Committee for review this Thursday. The committee will not hold new inquiries into the Chief Justice and Justice Adam, but will merely ensure the JSC followed due process in making its decision.

Commencing the parliamentary sitting this Thursday morning, Speaker Nasheed said that the JSC had filed the impeachment motion following inquiries by its investigative section, and that the Judiciary Committee will be supplied with all pertinent documents.

“Once the Judiciary Committee makes its decision and sends it to the parliamentary floor, honorable parliamentarians will receive three days to look into the committee’s decision. A decision will be made at the parliamentary floor after this,” said Nasheed, who also serves as a member of JSC.

Nasheed has announced that the Parliament will make its final decision regarding the impeachments on Monday, November 18.

The JSC placed both the Chief Justice and Justice Adam under 60-day suspension and announced the decision to initiate their impeachment on Wednesday.

Chief Justice Didi was placed under inquiry by JSC over alleged unconstitutional actions carried out by the Supreme Court. JSC, following its inquiry, advised the Chief Justice to rectify his behavior. However, the Chief Justice refused to accept JSC’s advice. He also refused to accept the copy of JSC’s findings in the case which he returned to the commission.

He also refused to accept the summons sent by JSC for an inquiry into a new ethical misconduct allegation which was filed against him.

Meanwhile, Justice Adam also recently excused himself attending the ongoing inquiry against him, claiming the summons sent by JSC had been invalid.
