Maldives urges transition to greener, low carbon economies

Maldives has urged member states of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to demonstrate their commitment towards transitioning to greener, low carbon economies.

The appeal was made by Maldivian Foreign Secretary Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed in his remarks at the Preparatory Ministerial Meeting of NAM, held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on Wednesday.

Abdul Gafoor stressed that climate change and environmental deterioration remained one of the most profound issues facing the modern world, and the most critical issue facing Maldives.

He said that cooperation between member states of NAM was crucial for meaningful solutions to global challenges, and urged member states to demonstrate their commitment to towards transitioning to greener, low carbon economies through action.

“Maldives stands ready to work with all countries to formulate adequate responses in a concerted manner,” he said.

His remarks also outlined Maldives’ support towards establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine.

The Preparatory Ministerial Meeting in Baku is in preparation for the 18th Summit of Heads of State and Government of NAM. Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid is scheduled to depart to Baku to attend the summit this Thursday.
