The Parliament’s Judiciary Committee has begun the process of impeaching Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham and has decided to notify the Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed regarding the matter.

Bisham who was appointed to the role on November 24, 2015, had been behind the charges leveled against opposition party leaders during the previo0us administration. Opposition leaders had called for her resignation regarding the charges they alleged were politically motivated. Some MPs of the current Parliament had called for her dismissal as well.

Under 210 of the Parliament, regulations allow a motion to dismiss the member of an independent institution to be submitted. The Speaker of the Parliament should then announce the case and send it to the relevant Committee without debate. The Committee then should notify the Speaker of the Parliament before beginning the process to dismiss the member of the independent institution.
