Mariya: Modern technology being exploited by people hiding behind anonymity

Defense Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi has warned of the existence of people engaged in exploiting modern technology for nefarious purposes while remaining safely hidden anonymity, in a modern world already gripped with security challenges from all fronts.

She issued the warning in her speech at the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX) - one of Middle East’s largest tech expos – at the Dubai World Trade Center on Wednesday.

Her speech focused on security in the 21st century, and the link between education and technology.

She spoke of Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s vision to develop a more educated, capable, united and healthy Maldivian community with the help of modern technology and education without compromising Maldives’ island nation principles.

She said that modern technology more effective in generating responses faster than traditional methods.

“Technology helps us reach all segments and allows them to share their concerns. As uncomfortable as it is, in this golden age of social media, one well-placed Tweet can generate a faster response than countless grievance letters,” said Mariya.

Mariya said that while technology and especially social media were useful tools, the people must also be aware of the existence of a small minority which exploit modern technology for nefarious purposes while hiding behind anonymity which modern technology allows.

She also commended the UAE for its e-government services, and its role in promoting equality, efficiency, transparence and countering corruption.

Mariya said that adopting such practices in Maldives can only boost President Solih’s zero tolerance to corruption policy.

Defense Minister Mariya has now concluded her official visit to UAE. In addition to attending GITEX, she also met with the Dubai Interior Minister Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
