The Parliament’s Committee on National Security & Foreign Relations has summoned Immigration officials over the case of two deported migrants who were suspected of criminal activities in the country.
The proposal to summon Immigration officials was submitted by MP for Villingili constituency, Ahmed Usham who was also the first to raise the matter in the Parliament.
“I am calling to enquire about the matter whether it is to Police or Immigration, even if it is through a letter and see why these men accused of criminal activities in the Maldives were deported without an investigation and see if there are any steps that must be taken.” Said MP Usham at the Committee today.
His calls were echoed by Vice-Chairmen of the Committee Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa who also stated that this was a matter of national security and the reason for their deportation without a proper investigation must be found out. He also stated that this was an important step against deterring such cases in the future.
After the two MPs had spoken, Chairmen of the Committee and MP for Maradhoo Ibrahim Shareef stated that a letter would first be submitted in the case and to summon the authorities involved in the matter later on.
However, Inguraidhoo MP Hassan Ahmed contrasted this view and stated that sending a letter would be a waste of time and called to summon the authorities and ask them to bring any documents or information they had regarding the matter.
This call was reiterated by the remaining members and was passed by unanimously by the Committee. The two migrants deported from the country are of Bangladeshi nationality and had been involved in illegally recruiting foreigners, conducting business activities and were also accused of money laundering.
