A workshop by United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre (UNCCT) focused on building capacity and in TVET institutes in the Maldives has concluded today.
The workshop was held from September 26 to 29 Sept 2019 and it was Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan who officiated the closing ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister said that the peace and harmony of the society can be enhanced through battling violent extremism and terrorism in the country and also noted that at-risk adolescents who lack proper education have a high risk of moving towards extremist ideologies.
The Minister then touched upon the tremendous effort made by the government through capacity building programs with TVET and other educational institutions to create resilience among the young learners. Terrorism is a grave and urgent threat where the effort of a whole of government and the whole society is required in the prevention efforts, the Minister noted.
Chief Executive Officer of Maldives Polytechnic Mr. Ahmed Nasir commended the participants of the workshop for their great amount of contribution, in his welcoming remarks.
Mr. Ahmed also said that the most pressing issues we face today were regarding environmental sustainability and peaceful societies. He also said that TVET can potentially develop a curriculum to deal with social deviation such as terrorism and drug abuse.
A UNCCT official highlighted that the knowledge provided through this program would assist the participants in the ongoing work and challenges for countering and preventing violent extremism in the Maldives.
