Attacks on Corrections Officers by inmates are fuelled by a state of confusion according to the Commissioner of Prisons Abdulla Munaz.
The Commissioner stated so at the annual ceremony of Maldives Correctional Services in Maafushi prison last night and also stated that it was a huge responsibility to oversee people who are used to an environment of crime and that challenges are posed to bring a good change to their perceptions and thinking.
The Corrections Officers have always faced physical abuse, harassment, bullying and even death threats from inmates, said the Commissioner who pointed out that 40 such instances of attacks on Officers have been reported so far this year in the Maafushi prison alone. He then stated that these attacks were not due to any issues between the inmates and officers.
He also called on Corrections Officers to work for the rights of inmates and to improve the standards and conditions of prisons. He stressed that the standards of prisons in the country were at a destitute level and that this was something that was going to be changed soon.
The Commissioner stated that revisions of the policies and regulations of prison standards will be published before the end of the year.
