Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has stated that making queues in front of the Economic Ministry is useless and that only 150 people can be served per day. The Minister was speaking as hundreds of illegal migrant workers queued in front of the regularisation unit at the former Prosecutor General's Office.

The migrant workers are queueing in the hope of being registered and work in the Maldives legally as part of a second chance program by the Ministry which was announced last Wednesday. It is reported that migrant workers have been queuing in front of the building day and night.

The Minister tweeted that the capacity of the Ministry currently allowed them to serve only 100-150 migrants per day and advised the workers that queueing was useless.

"We have given six months for illegal migrant workers to get registered, so queuing in front of the building at night is not going to be beneficial." said the Minister.

A large number of workers were queueing near the building since 8:00 last night and the number had increased by 10:00 in the morning of today. Immigration has estimated that 63,000 migrant workers were in the country illegally.
