President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has nominated Drug Court Judge Mahaz Ali Zahir to the Supreme Court bench.
The President, in a short statement via his official Twitter account, announced that he requested the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for an opinion regarding appointing Mahaz to the Supreme Court this Thursday.
Mahaz has been nominated by the President to fill the vacancy left with the impeachment of former Supreme Court justice Abdulla Didi on August 28.
Once the JSC gives its go-ahead, the President will send Mahaz’s name, along with the names of other applicants, to the Parliament for its approval.
Other contenders for the vacant Supreme Court seat includes High Court Judge Ali Sameer and former Deputy Prosecutor General Mariyam Nihayath.
