Jailed former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor has been tagged with an electronic ankle bracelet and transferred to house arrest.
‘Sun’ is able to confirm the former VP – who has been ordered to jail pending the outcome of an appeal at the Supreme Court – was transferred to house arrest on Wednesday night.
Though transferred to house arrest, Adeeb is under surveillance by police and has been made to wear an electronic ankle bracelet.
Maldives Correctional Service reports Adeeb was transferred to house arrest at his doctor’s instruction.
The duration of his house arrest is unclear.
Adeeb was recently hospitalized at IGMH before he was transferred back to jail.
He was ordered to jail pending the outcome of the appeal filed by the State over his acquittal for embezzling USD 5 million paid by Kuredu Holdings to Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) as acquisition cost for Lh. Maabinhuraa.
Adeeb had walked free earlier this year after the High Court had overturned all convictions against Adeeb and called for retrials, but had been under a travel ban imposed by the Supreme Court in connection to the Maabinhuraa appeal.
He was rearrested after getting caught attempting to enter India illegally from the Tuticorin Port, and in violation of the travel ban on August 1.
Adeeb is the prime State witness in the money laundering case in progress at the Criminal Court against former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, and has agreed to cooperate with the police for its investigation into the MMPRC embezzlement and money laundering case.
