4 High Court judges apply to Supreme Court

Four judges from the High Court have for the two vacancies at the Supreme Court.

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has opened application to appoint two additional justices to the Supreme Court as required under the recent amendment to the Judicature Act which increased the number of the top court’s justices from five to seven.

Sun has been informed four High Court judges have applied to the position. They are:

  • Judge Abdulla Hameed
  • Judge Ali Sameer
  • Judge Shuaib Hussain Zakariyya
  • Judge Mohamed Niyaz

Judge Hameed was appointed to the High Court in 2007, prior to which he served as a judge at the Civil Court.

Judge Sameer was appointed to the High Court in 2011, prior to which he served as a Chief Judge at Civil Court.

Judge Shuaib, too, was appointed to the High Court in 2011, prior to which he served as Chief Judge at Juvenile Court, and a judge at Civil Court and Family Court.

Judge Niyaz was appointed to the High Court in January 2018, prior to which he served as Chief Magistrate of the H. Dh. Judicial District.

Meanwhile, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has nominated two of his own candidates for Supreme Court; former Civil Court judge Aisha Shujoon and former High Court judge Dr. Azmiralda Zahir.

The deadline for application expired at noon this Sunday.
