The parliament has passed three resolutions regarding fishing in today's session as per the recommendations of the Committee on Economic Affairs.
Resolutions passed by the government today are:
1) Resolution by Dhuvaafaru MP Ismail Ahmed calling for foreign boats to enter the Maldives to purchase fish from Maldivian boats.
The resolution was voted for by 65 members and calls for the termination of agreements with four parties to buy fish from Maldivian fishermen and conduct an analysis to allow foreign vessels to enter Maldivian waters and purchase fish from Maldivian boats.
2) Resolution by Thoddoo MP Hassan Shiyan calling for neighborhood fish factories to be established in islands with the cooperation of both the public and island council.
The resolution was passed by 72 MPs and called to identify the machinery, technology, and equipment that will be needed to establish neighborhood fish plants and factories as well as set out ways to lease lands for the factories.
It also called for identifying ways in which the island or city council can be involved in the operations of the factory and providing the opportunity to open and establish these factories that would buy and process fish from Maldivian fishermen.
The resolution by MP Shinaan was supported by almost all MP's during the discussion process.
3) Resolution by Mid-Maafannu MP Ibrahim Rasheed to identify Maldivian fishing areas and establish offshore platforms.
This resolution was passed by 71 MPs and called for Maldivian fishermen's catch to be given a fair price and set out easier methods to sell fish. It also called for the establishment of offshore platforms to sell fish and allow fishermen to travel further away from islands.
