Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has filed a motion for prosecutorial misconduct with the Supreme Court against State prosecutor Aishath Mohamed.
Yameen’s attorney, Abdulla Siyaz reports to ‘Sun’ the defense team filed the motion for prosecutorial misconduct because Prosecutor Aishath Mohamed had lied at one of the hearings in Yameen’s money laundering trial.
Prosecutor Aishath Mohamed, at the money laundering trial, said Yameen attempted to tamper with witness testimony by offering bribes to State’s witnesses.
The motion against her makes note that the High Court had already ruled the State had no evidence to back its claim of witness tampering.
Attorney Abdulla Siyaz reports the team filed the motion with the Supreme Court last week.
The Criminal Court, in the televised preliminary hearing on Sunday, July 21, rejected all of the pretrial motions filed on behalf of Yameen for dismissal of the case against him.
The case has now gone to trial.
Yameen faces a 5 to 15-year prison sentence and a fine of MVR 100,000 to MVR 1 million, or a 5 to 15-year prison sentence and maximum five times the amount he laundered if found guilty.
