The process of the Maldives rejoining the Commonwealth of Nations will be completed by this year according to the organization.

The State Minister of the Commonwealth Office Mr. Thariq Mahmood informed the British Parliament that the application by the Maldives to rejoin the Commonwealth is being processed and that discussions were currently being held with the Maldivian Foreign Minister Mr. Abdullah Shahid.

The Maldives applied to rejoin the commonwealth on June 12, 2019. The Maldivian ambassador for UK Dr. Farahanaz Faisal also met with the Secretary-General of Commonwealth Ms. Patricia Scotland on Wednesday.

The Maldives left the Commonwealth in 2016 after accusing the organization of meddling in the interior affairs of the country. However, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration has made rejoining the Commonwealth an important pledge of his term in office.
