Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) has been ordered by the High Court to pay Kudahuvadhoo MP and the deputy leader of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) Mr. Ahmed Amir, MVR 4 million after the initial amount of MVR 19 million ordered by the civil court was reduced.
The court ordered to DRP to pay for the works conducted by DRP in 2015 using two studios that were owned by Mr. Amir. Some of the works included video coverage and editing of DRP’s political activities from 2007-09.
The Civil Court then ordered DRP to pay the MVR 4.05 million owed to the studios as well as the MVR 15.9 million fine, totaling an amount of MVR 19.10 million. However, today’s ruling by the High Court did not include the MVR 15 million fine and ordered DRP to pay the remaining MVR 4.05 million.
The High Court reasoned that the fine was nullified because it contradicted Islamic Sharia Law and modern-day Legal Systems to order the payment of an unjust and disproportionate amount of money.
