Nasheed: Shareef ‘clearly misled’ the committee, must be investigated

Speaker of Parliament, President Mohamed Nasheed says the deputy CEO of Bank of Maldives, Mohamed Shareef had misled the Public Accounts Committee of the Parliament and must therefore be investigated.

Nasheed made the remark just before adjourning the parliamentary session for lunch break this Tuesday.

Nasheed said that he was in possession of the minutes of the meeting of the Public Accounts Committee during which senior officials of BML were questioned.

He said the minutes showed Shareef, when questioned by committee members, told them that the bank did not allow the deposit of any cross cheques made out to Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) to SOF Private Limited’s bank account.

He said the pictures of such cheques circulating over social media platforms proved that Shareef had misled the committee.

“There’s therefore no other route than to investigate this. He clearly misled the committee,” said Nasheed.

The Parliament first announced its decision to request the police for an investigation into Shareef over the allegation during a press conference on Sunday. However, Nasheed, during the parliamentary sitting on Monday, announced he had received a letter from Shareef saying he had not deliberately misinformed the committee, but had answered the questions with the information he had at hand at the time.

Nasheed said he was considering withdrawing the request for an investigation against Shareef, but announced this Tuesday that he intended to proceed with the investigation.
