Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is scheduled to make a decision regarding seeking advice from the Parliament to run a performance evaluation on Supreme Court justices during its meeting on Monday.

It has been 10 years since a performance evaluation was conducted on judges.

Article 285 (b) of the Constitution states that JSC must run an evaluation to determine whether judges fit the required criteria within two years the Constitution comes into effect.

Article 149 of the Constitution declares the criteria for a judge as:

  • Being capable enough to fulfil his/her duties and responsibilities as a judge
  • Being a person of exemplary behavior

Article 149 (c) of the Constitution further stipulates that a Supreme Court justice must be:

  • A person of 30 years or above
  • A person with experience of minimum seven years as an attorney-at-law and/or as a judge
  • A person with educational qualifications in Islamic Sharia and/or law
