Statistics released by the Traffic Management Department of Maldives Police Service show 1,014 parking violation stickers were issued in the one-week period from June 15-21.

The State is expected to have generated an estimated MVR 500,000 in fines for the parking violations.

FINE FOR PARKING VIOLATION

  • First offense: MVR 250
  • Second offense: MVR 500
  • Third offense: MVR 750

The 1,014 stickers, calculated at the rate of MVR 500, amounts to a little over MVR 500,000.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, during his presidential campaign in 2018, promised to suspend issuance of parking violation stickers until the State arranges sufficient parking space in the congested capital. Issuance of parking violation stickers was suspended in the beginning of 2019, but re-imposed in late February following gross parking violations.

Male’ City Council is in the middle of a project to build more parking areas in the city to remedy the issue.

Statistics for the one-week period from June 15-21 also shows the police conducted spot checks on 467 vehicles. 146 of the vehicles were identified to have been operated without a license.

The police also penalized 35 drivers for over speeding.

Total 42 traffic accidents were reported in the Greater Male’ Area last week, four of which resulted in injuries. Authorities suspended licenses of 18 drivers in connection to the accidents.

The statistics also show the police stopped 33 drivers for operating vehicles while on the phone or wearing their headsets, two drivers for failing to wear helmets in areas the helmet regulation is imposed on, and four drivers for operating taxis without the necessary permits.
