High Court has annulled the eight-year sentence issued against former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor for graft.

The decision by High Court this Thursday morning means all court rulings against Adeeb have now been annulled.

Though the former VP no longer has any outstanding prison sentence, he remains under house arrest as per the decision of Supreme Court on May 2.

Adeeb was sentenced to eight years in prison for graft after he was found guilty of corruption in the award of uninhabited islands for resort development via Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

High Court, this Thursday, annulled the sentence and ordered a retrial.

Adeeb had total three sentences issued against him. A 15-year sentence over the explosion onboard the presidential speedboat, Finifenma, in 2015; a 10-year sentence for possession of a firearm; and the eight-year graft sentence.

Adeeb had faced 33 years in prison as the three prison sentence weren’t to be served concurrently, but separately.

However, the 15-year sentence in the Finifenma explosion case was overturned and ordered for a retrial by High Court on May 20; the 10-year sentence for possession of a firearm was overturned by the Supreme Court on May 27; and the last sentence – the eight-year graft sentence has now been overturned and ordered for a retrial.
