EC: Decision on candidates that did not submit financial declarations will be made on Monday

Elections Commission stated that they will be coming to a decision on how to treat the candidates who did not submit their financial declarations next Monday.

General Elections Act requires all candidates of a national election to submit financial declarations detailing their campaign expenditures to Elections Commission within 21 days of polling day. 39 candidates did not submit their declarations before the deadline ran out at midnight last Saturday. 

Member of EC Amjad told sun that actions would be taken according to the General Elections Act against those candidates who did not submit their financial declarations and the decision would be made next Monday.

“We will hold a meeting tomorrow to make a decision on how to handle the candidates that did not submit financial declarations,” stated Amjad.

EC states that 347 candidates from a total of 386 candidates submitted their financial declarations before the deadline.

 The statistics published by EC shows that the greatest number of candidates that did not submit their financial declarations are independent candidates. 31 independent candidates did not submit their financial declarations. Two candidates from Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), one candidate form People’s National Congress (PNC) and one candidate from Adalat Party did not submit their financial declarations. Additionally, two candidates from Labor Party and two candidates from Maldives Third Way Democrats did not submit their financial declarations.

Candidates from Maldives Democratic Party, Jumhoori Party and Maldives Development Alliance submitted their financial declarations before the allocated deadline.
