The introduction of new regulations making helmets compulsory on the Sinamale’ Bridge and Hulhumale’ Highway has led to an increase in demand for ferry services between Male’ City and Hulhumale’.

Head of Transport Division of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Mohamed Nazim reports the number of ferry passengers increased by 10-20 percent last week.

New regulation making helmets compulsory for transport via Sinamale’ Bridge and Hulhumale’ Highway kicked in on March 10.

Nazim has urged people who commute between Male’ City and Hulhumale’ to use modes of public transport such as ferries and public buses to avoid problems such as congestion, lack of parking space and pollution.

"We need to increase use of ferry and and bus services. It’s better than everyone driving a motorcycle and also a solution to congestion," said Nazim.

Nazim reports the MTCC is engaged in discussions with the Maldivian administration to improve public transportation in the Greater Male’ Area.

‘Sun’ has been informed MTCC plans on extending ferry service hours beyond 12:30 am.
